Allsports

Hello everyone, allsports here for a bit of sports news and sports on the web. Fall is a busy time of year in the world of sports. Football is in full swing in both the Canadian Football League and in the National Football League. Hockey is in the preseason, with the regular season just around the corner. Major League Baseball’s regular season is winding down and the playoff picture is becoming clearer. Lacrosse is over for another year and training camps are getting started for the NBA, if there is no strike.

Lindsay ready for the Faceoff

My daughter’s provincials for women’s field were a little disappointing this year. Personally my daughter Lindsay had a pretty good showing but the team just did not perform up to expectations and we did not get into the playoff round. There were many reasons why this happened but I don’t want to say who was not playing up to their potential. Lindsay made the most of the chances she was given finding the net whenever she was given the opportunity. But alas on a whole the chances were slim because the ladies did not play smart lacrosse and got caught chasing the ball instead of controlling it. Enough said.

MLB

The Major League Baseball season is almost over and the main question allsports has is, are the Boston Red Sox going to hold onto the wild card position in the American League? or are they going to crash and burn with one of the worst collapses in Major League history. The Red Sox have had a brutal September and a very comfortable lead has disappeared. Can they hold on? The picture will be clear after this weekends games.

The World Series Trophy

For my money the World Series will be going through Philadelphia this year and the Phillies will be the team to beat. There is just too much quality pitching in their dugout not to mention a strong offense to complement it. Two questions remain for the regular season. Justin Verlander should be a shoe in for the Cy Young award in the American League as far as allsports is concerned and will Jose Bautista be the American League MVP. The numbers he has put up this year give him a great chance but some of the time the team performance helps dictate the winner. Curtis Granderson, could take it away from Bautista. Who would you pick for the National League Cy Young. Two Phillies come to mind, Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee.

Granderson has had a great season and the Yankees did win their division but Bautista still gets the nod from allsports.

National Football League team Logos

The National Football League is in full swing and allsports is wondering if the readers are thinking the same way he is. In the AFC allsports likes what the New England Patriots did in the off season and they have to be one of the favorites to make some noise. Allsports also thinks the New York Jets will still be around when the dust settles. Don’t count the Pittsburgh Steelers out either. They didn’t look good in week one but it is a long season and there is one thing the Steelers know how to do and that is win.

Aaron Rogers

In the NFC allsports thinks that the road to the Super Bowl will go through Green Bay. They showed last year that they have great depth in the organization and Aaron Roger became a star. The Philadelphia Eagles made some very good improvements too and have arguably the best defensive secondary in the league. Micheal Vick running the offense will make sure the Eagles can put some points on the board. Look for the Detroit Lions to finally turn the corner and be a competitive team this year. This could be bad news for my Chicago Bears as they will be in a dog fight to make the playoffs in a very tough division. As I see it now the Eagles will be playing the Packers for the NFC championship.

NHL Logo

The National Hockey League preseason is underway with the regular season just around the corner. Can Boston stay on top or will they have a Stanley Cup hangover. The Toronto Maple Leafs should be better this year and hopefully make the playoffs. Jake Gardiner has been a very pleasant surprise on the Leafs blue line and has shown he has the skating and hockey mentality to play in the NHL Mike Komisarek on the other hand might be playing in the American League soon. Allsports thinks he is too slow for the League and always a half a step behind the play. He will ultimately take unnecessary penalties because of this and may serve the Leafs better on the farm where he can help Dallas Eakins develop the Leafs young talent. There won’t be much interest in Komisarek with the contract he has so he may as well be sent down so he won’t be on the salary cap for the big club.

So there you have it, just a few of allsports thoughts in the wonderful world of sports news and sports on the web.

Allsports article on things going on in the sports world, in the news and on the web. You may not agree but your opinions are welcome.

Allsports

Well allsports was going to talk about the womens lacrosse provincials last weekend in Whitby Ontario but when you are relying on your 16 year old daughter to download the pictures for you sometimes you just have to wait. Its a very busy life don’t you know and what dad wants seems to take a back seat to other more pressing issues. The camera with the pictures needed disappeared for the weekend and ended up at the Britney Spears concert last night. She went there with her half sister and by all accounts they had a good time. Problem is that it does not help me with the lacrosse post.

Britney Spears in Toronto

So with that said Allsports thought he would talk little about sports in General for sports on the web.

Brampton Excelsiors logo

Brooklin Redmen

The Brampton Excelsiors lead the Brooklin Redmen three games to two after a 10-8 overtime win in Brooklin last Thursday night. Brampton can put the Redmen away with a win at home tonight. This is some of the best sports entertainment you will find and the cost is only about $10. If Brampton moves on they will play the winner of the Peterborough Lakers, Six Nation Chiefs series which the lakers also lead 3-2 and can wrap up tonight as well.

National Football League team Logos

Well it was good to see that the NFL owners and players finally gave their heads a shake and averted a strike. There is plenty of money to go around in the NFL and it would have been foolish of either party to force a lock out. You can’t blame the players on this one because their careers could be cut short by injury at any time. All it takes is one play and a player could be done. Greed was what was fueling the owners fire and sorry but you can’t have it all. Allsports was not completely sure what all of the fuss was about but I still find it amazing that the NFL owners can get away with un-guaranteed contracts to the players. They are the only professional sport that gets away with it. Who knows maybe that was one of the issues the players were bitching about. I know I would be if I was a players union rep, Careers can be quite fleeting in this league. So now everyone can rest easy with the bets and pools.

Bautista Beaned

I could not believe that the Toronto Blue Jays did not retaliate against the Orioles when their starting pitcher Jake Arrieta beaned Jose Bautista in the head a couple of weeks back. It was an accident but still the Blue jays should have hit one of the Orioles batters in the ribs with a good fastball just to let them know you don’t screw around with our star player. That in a nut shell is why the Jays are going no where again this year, get tough out there boys and don’t take any shit. Do you think the Red Sox or the Yankees would take that crap, not in your life. That’s why the Jays are 13 games behind the Red Sox with no hope of getting back in the race. Boston does not loose to often to the weak sisters in the league while the Jays always have trouble with the bottom feeders, enough said.

Allsports article on sports news and sports on the web with an emphasis on the tragic death of a Young father reaching for a ball while watching a Texas Ranger game.

Allsports

Hello everyone, allsports here for the sports news and sports on the web. I know it has been quite a while since my last post but I have been very busy with everyday life and finding the time to write has been a bit of a challenge. Busy with work, busy with kids and their schedule for women’s lacrosse. Home renovations ( I am putting in a new bathroom). All this adds up to very little time to sit down and write for the blog. Yes summer is a very busy time of the year for allsports. Lacrosse takes up three nights through the week with practices, with the games almost every weekend at some location in Southern Ontario. Work around the house not only with the renovation but just keeping things up, cutting the grass, keeping the pool clean and trying to get to a cottage that I have not had a chance to get to for almost two months now.

Not only is there the factor of the time to write but when you do, what do you write about? I am a firm believer that you do not produce content just for the sake of doing so. You just don’t write a bunch of drivel and put it out there for everyone to see. Unless it is something worthwhile don’t bother writing it. If I can make any suggestion to new bloggers that would be it. Make posts that people will enjoy reading with some information they can use. It will serve you much better in the long run. Avoid the auto content sites because if you’re using it, how many others are too? The content should be unique and informative and with that said I will leave it at that.

There have been quite a few stories in the world of sports news and sports on the web in the last while, the Japanese women’s soccer team captured their first world cup, defeating a strong American side in the final on penalty kicks. Jose Bautista received the highest number of all star votes ever ( about 7.5 million) in MLB history. To start in the all star game. Other young guns are emerging on the PGA tour to fill the vacuum left from the Tiger Woods saga. But nothing really stood out that I wanted to talk about. The thing that I felt most strongly about was the tragic development in Texas where a young father lost his life while taking in a baseball game with his little boy. The news was very sad indeed and allsports thought it more of a human interest story with very real legal ramifications. If it helps to prevent future mishaps then it will have been time well spent.

The issue that allsports really wants to touch on today in the sports news and sports on the web is the tragic accident at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington Texas a couple of weeks ago. Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers tossed a ball to a father for his young son, who was also in attendance for the ball game. While the father was reaching to make the catch he lost his balance and tumbled over the balcony falling roughly 20 feet. The circumstances were strange indeed because witnesses claimed the man was concuss and concerned for his sons well being while in transit to the hospital. The man later died from his injuries.

Rangers Ballpark in Arlington

So what’s the deal with this stadium, last year another fan almost died from the same type of accident. So now allsports has to ask the question. Are the fans in Texas just too enthusiastic in trying to catch the balls or is there an engineering flaw in the design of the stadium? Anyway you look at it, it is really a moot point and the Texas Rangers should be putting safe guards in place so this latest fatality will be the stadiums last. The guard rail height should be increased a minimum of one foot so people can’t lean out so far. Either that or safety nets should be installed to catch the people who topple over the edge. Any way you slice it something has to be done to ensure fan safety. If you watch the video below you will see that the rail height is right below the victims hip which would knock the person off balance if they were reaching or more like lunging for a ball.

Click here to view the embedded video.

No matter Arlington Stadium needs some modifications or it will be known as the death ball park. Put modifications in place so no more lives will be lost going to see a baseball game.

Allsports was hoping to have written and posted this article for sports news and sports on the web a little earlier in the week. Like just after the San Francisco Giants became the holders of the Commissioner’s Trophy as the 2010 World Series Champions, but that didn’t happen. Since allsports in not a full time sports news scribe it was a little difficult to find the time to get the article written. The regular PAYING job got in the way so allsports is a little tardy with the sports news and sports on the web and for that I apologize.

Giants Logo

The bottom line is that the San Francisco Giants are your 2010 World Series Champions and were labeled the underdogs by everyone including yours truly. I should have seen the writing on the wall when they got past the Philadelphia Phillies, who allsports had picked to win it all based on their great starting pitching. The alarm bells should have gone off then when they matched the Phillies pitch for pitch and then some. Also contributing some timely hits to win that series 4-2. But no that was not the case, allsports thought that the offense the Texas Rangers generated in man handling the New York Yankees would carry them through and having Cliff Lee available for three starts if needed would help the cause. Not so the Yankees pitching that the Rangers faced was like batting practice compared to what the Giants threw at them. There did not appear to be a week link in the whole staff and Bruce Bochy played them like a virtuoso.

Rangers Logo

So what went wrong for the Texas Rangers? Well as stated in the previous paragraph, the Giants pitched pretty well mistake free, using both sides of the plate and changing speeds so well that even if there was the odd mistake made, the Rangers hitters were unprepared to jump on the pitch. The series was the epitome of the old baseball phrase that “good pitching always beats good hitting”

Ron Washington

The Rangers also got away from what got them into the playoffs and to the championship in the first place. That is playing aggressive baseball, stealing bases and manufacturing runs. Forcing errors from the other team and playing a little bit of small ball to keep the opposition off balance. Under Ron Washington the Rangers had learned how to do that, to play almost a National League style without relying on the long ball but in the World Series they did not show it, whether they got away from the game plan or the Giants pitching did not allow them to do so.

Bruce_Bochy

In the end allsports thinks Ron Washington was out managed by Bruce Bochy, mind you the Giants as a team made very few if any mistakes and were able to get that timely hit when they needed it. The Texas bullpen crashed and burned in the series but did that have something to do with the way Washington handled them or was it strictly a matter of not making the pitches? Or were they worn out by the time the World Series came around?

Tim_Lincecum

What allsports does think though is the San Francisco Giants have a bright future if they can keep their young core players together. Good young pitchers with Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner showed poise beyond their years on the biggest of baseball’s stages. Special mention should also be made for Buster Posey, their prized rookie catcher who batted cleanup as well as handling the pitching staff like a seasoned veteran.

Buster Posey

On an interesting side note Bengie Molina was with the San Francisco Giants and tutored Buster Posey on the craft of being a big league catcher, then when the Giants realized Posey was ready for prime time they traded Molina to the Rangers at the deadline. So Molina will get his World Series ring but he will get it from the Giants and not the Rangers. Talk about a no loose situation.

Allsports article on the 2010 World Series. The Texas Rangers bullpen has worn the goat horns so far in the series and the Rangers fortunes rest on the shoulders of Colby Lewis.

The Commissioner's Trophy (What they play for)

Allsports has to wonder based on the sports news and sports on the web for Baseball, whether he gave the Texas Rangers the kiss of death by picking them to beat the San Francisco Giants in the World Series. The Rangers have appeared to be anything but the juggernaut that charged through the opposition for the American League pennant. The bats that were so opportunistic to get here have gone cold and their reliable bullpen has imploded. Ron Washington who managed so well in the American League playoffs, seems out of his league trying to cope with the National League rules, dealing with the bullpen which is so much more critical with the pitch hitting developments that evolve in the National League. He seems to have gotten away from the judgments that got him here and has had everyone scratching their heads as to what he is thinking. The bottom line is he has been out managed by Bruce Bochy

Bruce_Bochy

To be fare though, the Rangers bullpen has crapped the bed with every opportunity they have been given and has not executed, while Bochy is looking like a genius with every move he makes. The Giants have played mistake free with great pitching and timely hitting. The Rangers just can’t seem to win in the “City by the Bay“. They have lost something like eleven straight times there going back a decade or more. Obviously that will have to change if the Rangers are fortunate enough to get the series back to San Francisco.

Ron Washington

The Texas Rangers are out of mulligans. For them to get back into the series they will have to play mistake free the rest of the way and match the Giants intensity or it will be a short series. They have to execute, something they have not done in the series to date. We will see if the real Rangers team shows up tonight in their home park.

Here is the way allsports has viewed the first two games.

Giants Logo

The pitching duel in game one between Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum did not unfold as predicted. Allsports does not know whether Lee had to much rest between starts (he had nine days off between starting game 3 against the Yankees and game 1 of the World Series). For what ever reason the pitcher with ultimate control could not get his curve ball over for strikes. Without that pitch he became predictable and you can’t be that against major league hitters. If they have an idea on what is coming, they will hit it. Lincecum was not much better and was actually hit by two line drive base hits before leaving. The bullpens took over and the Giants pen was better than the Rangers pen. There were a total of 25 hits in the game, 14 by the Giants and 11 by the Rangers

Rangers Logo

Game two saw the Giants, Matt Cain up against CJ Wilson of the Rangers. Both pitchers performed well but Wilson blinked first, he pitched 6 innings and left trailing 2-0 but only allowed 3 hits. Wilson pitched to one batter in the 7th before he had to come out of the game with a blister problem on his pitching hand. Oliver came on for Wilson and closed out the inning. Cain took a 4 hit shutout into the 7th before he left the game. Oliver started the eighth for the Rangers and was replaced by O’Day after giving up a hit. O’Day stuck out out 2 but allowed the run to score. Washington decided to replace O’Day with Holland, why allsports does not know? When Holland game on the wheels fell off the tracks for the Rangers. Holland could not throw a strike and walked 3 straight batters and allowed 3 runs without a hit. Lowe came on and walked in another run, then allowed a hit for another. Kirkman came on for Lowe and gave up 2 hits and another run before finally stopping the bleeding with the final out on the inning. When the dust had settled the Giants had batted around and scored 7 runs and took the game 9-0. It was likely one of the worst pitched innings in MLB playoff history. Cain on the other hand has now pitched 21 2/3 scoreless innings in the playoffs. The second highest total in Major League playoff history.

So now all of the Rangers fortunes rest on the shoulders of Colby Lewis, he has to gets the train back on the tracks. There will be a lot of pressure on him to do just that because the Rangers have run out of wiggle room and cannot afford another loss.

Allsports article on the World Series between the Texas Rangers and the San Francisco Giants. Can Texas hit the Giants pitching. Will Cliff Lee continue his playoff magic.

The Commissioner's Trophy

So if you’re following the baseball sports news or sports on the web you likely already know which teams got through to play in the 2010 World Series. The San Francisco Giants ended up taking out the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 in game six, winning the series 4-2. Texas defeated the New York Yankees by the same 4-2 series score the previous night.

Giants Logo

The Giants threw everything they had at the Phillies and even had Lincecum come in a pitch an inning. In the end the Phillies bats let them down. They could not get that timely hit while the Giants seemed to get that hit when they needed it. Cody Ross was the NLCS MVP and for good reason. Ross batted .350 in the series and always seemed to get that timely hit. What allsports could not understand was why the Phillies kept pitching him inside. They would give him some heat inside and he would stroke it into left field or over the fence in left. Makes me think about the definition of insanity, keep doing the same thing and hope you get a different outcome. Well the outcome was the same and the Phillies will be watching the series from home.

Rangers Logo

Texas thoroughly outplayed the Yankees in every facet of the game. They had better pitching and hitting. When you look at the statistics from the series you have to wonder how the Yankees managed to win two games. Not only did Cliff Lee stymie the Yankees in his start but Colby Lewis and C.J. Wilson were pretty effective also. Texas could not have asked for a better outcome against the Yankees. With Cliff Lee only having to pitch one game in the series, he will start the World Series for the Rangers. If the Rangers bats can stay hot, the first World Series Championship will be coming to the Lone Star State.

Cliff Lee with Seattle before trade to Texas

This should be a great series between two teams that the experts did not think would be here. If you had of bet in Vegas on them meeting in the World Series before the playoffs began the odds would have been great. Allsports did not see this series coming either and will have to eat some crow because I thought the Phillies pitching would carry them through.

Tim_Lincecum

A World Series like this is good for the game. Having two teams that are here for the first time sparks some interest instead of having the usual suspects in it again. Cliff Lee will face Tim Lincecum in game one. Both are the aces of their pitching staffs and it should make for some stingy defense on both sides. The way Lee has pitched I may give him a slight edge but both pitching staffs have performed great in the playoffs and that is why they are here. Texas has not faced a pitching staff like the Giants have but the Rangers pitchers have proven that they have their A game going too.

Allsports thinks that the Rangers have slightly more pop in their hitting lineup and it could prove to be the difference. That and the fact that Cliff Lee can pitch three games in a seven game series. The National League gets the extra home game based on winning the All Star game, so that could help the Giants. Vladimir Guerrero may not see much in the way of playing time in San Francisco because there is no DH in the National League parks. All in all this series should have everything in it, great pitching and some timely hitting. Allsports thinks it will go 6-7 games and everything else being equal the Texas hitters will come through. The Rangers are playing well as a team so I am picking them to win their first World Series, but what do I know, I thought the Phillies were going to win it all.

“No Guts No Glory”

Hi all, allsports here with an update on the baseball sports news and sports on the web. A fare bit has gone down since my last post. There will be a new World Series Champion this year and the odds seem pretty good that they will be a first time winner. The Texas Rangers won the American League Pennant last night and are going to the World Series for the first time in their 50 year history. Meanwhile in the National League, the San Francisco Giants have the defending National League champs, the Philadelphia Phillies on the ropes and could advance with a win tonight. The Giants have won the World Series before, the problem is though, they did it as the New York Giants in 1954, when Willie Mays made “the Catch”. The Giants then moved to the west coast for the start of the 1958 season.

The Giants have impressed allsports with their play. With them being out on the west coast allsports does not see much of them. I knew their pitching was pretty good, I just didn’t know how good. They have gone pitch for pitch with the Phillies, who allsports thought had the best pitching staff in the league. I would not be too upset if they screwed up my Phillies prediction and a ring for Roy Halladay. The Giants have played great ball and to top it off, they are still a fairly young team and could stay around for years to come. Now lets move on to what has gone on in each series.

The Texas Rangers went into New York and spanked the Yanks, outscoring the home side 20-10 in the three games. Cliff Lee as is becoming his playoff norm, shut the Yankees down to give the Rangers a 2-1 series lead. The next game Derek Holland started for the Rangers against AJ Burnett. Holland pitched great and got into the 8th inning. Burnett was not quite as lucky. He pitched well until the 6th inning but then the wheels fell off for him and the Yankees. Texas ended up winning the contest in a walk 10-3. CC Sabathia got the Yankees back to within one game with a 7-2 win the following night. This was the only game of the series that New York outplayed the Rangers. Then last night the Rangers handed the ball back to Colby Lewis and he did not disappoint. Lewis pitched 8 strong innings and Phil Hughes got knocked around again in a 6-1 Rangers victory. The Rangers move on to the World Series with a 4-2 series win. The Rangers knocked off the two best teams in the American League to win the pennant and have served notice that they will be tough to beat. The win by Colby Lewis sets the Rangers rotation up nicely for the World Series. Cliff Lee did not have to pitch in a game 7 so he will start the series for the Rangers. This gives Texas the option of having Lee start 3 games if the World Series goes seven Games. From what allsports has seen there is a high probability of that.

In the National League, Roy Oswalt picked up Halladay in game two and pitched a gem for the Phillies to tie the series at one. Oswalt was also helping his own cause with the bat, hitting a single and scoring a run. In game three Matt Cain had the Phillies hitters off balance all night and he beat Cole Hamels 3-0. Game 4 saw the Giants come back to take the game 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth after the Phillies had battled back to tie it. With the win the Giants took a commanding 3-1 series lead. Roy Halladay started game five against Giants ace Tim Lincecum and willed a different outcome from game one. Halladay was the diminutive starting pitcher in this game, winning it without his best stuff. He held the Giants to two runs despite a slightly pulled groin and the Phillies won the game 4-2. This brings the series back to Philly with the home side still trailing 3-2. Thats where we stand going into tonight. Roy Oswalt goes up against Jonathan Sanchez

Allsports article on the League Championship series in the MLB. Who will advance to the World Series

Major League Baseball Logo

Allsports here for Baseball sports news and sports on the web. The Championship Series are under way for both the American and National League pennants. Two games are in the books for the American League and today is a travel day from Texas to New York while game two in the Senior circuit goes tonight in Philadelphia.

American League Logo

Texas rebounded nicely yesterday after their bull pen imploded the night before. The Yankees rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the first game to post a come from behind 6-5 win in game one but Texas was having non of that yesterday in game two. The Rangers jumped all over Yankees starter Phil Hughes while journeyman Colby Lewis put in five plus innings of workman like pitching to post a 7-2 Rangers victory, tying the series at a game apiece.

Colby Lewis

The Rangers bull pen got the job done yesterday and squashed any New York ideas of a comeback. Texas is looking pretty good because their ace, Cliff Lee starts game three in New York.

National League Logo

Game one of the National League Championship series got underway last night in Philly. Both clubs sent their aces to the mound but Roy Halladay blinked before Tim Lincecum did. The Giants rallied for a 4-3 victory in game one of the series, but the Phillies won’t have long to contemplate the loss as game two goes tonight.

Tim Lincecum/Roy Halladay

Halladay appeared to be a mere mortal after all, both he and Lincecum gave up two homers each but Halladay surrendered 9 hits to Lincecums 7. Cody Ross was Halladay’s undoing as he hit both of the Giants home runs. The ironic thing is that the Giants picked Ross up on waivers just so the San Diego Padres could not get him. Ross started off as a bench player for the Giants but made the most of his chance to get into the lineup. He has played so well down the stretch that he has become a fixture in the Giants outfield.

The Phillies get a chance to even the series tonight in game two.

Allsports article on what is happening in the MLB playoff picture. Who will represent the American and National Leagues in the World Series

MLB Logo

Today I thought that a quick post was in order for some sports news and sports on the web. So now we are down to four teams in the hunt for a World Series Championship. Allsports did pretty good in the first round predictions, getting three of the four series right. The number of games in a couple of the them were wrong but the teams did advance. If you look at my previous post you will see that the only team to let me down was the Tampa Bay Rays. All I have to say on that is they got too much Cliff Lee in their diet and good pitching always beats good hitting. Now Texas gets to face the Yankees for their troubles. I am sure the Rangers are looking forward to the challenge. In every previous playoff series the Texas Rangers have been in it has been the Yankees who have beaten them. On that note the series versus the Rays was the first playoff series win for the Rangers in franchise history. You can bet the Rangers would love to send the Yankees packing and maybe they can if Lee and company can keep up their pitching heroics.

Bobby_Cox_Manager

In the National League, with the Giants win over Atlanta, Bobby Cox bids adieu to the sport he loves and retires at the age of 69. He has been involved in Baseball for the last 51 years and will be missed. He managed the Braves from 1978-1981 before coming to Toronto to manage the Blue Jays from 1982 to 1985. Then he went back to the Braves in the general managers role. Cox could not stay off the field though and came back as the manager in 1990. He remained a fixture in that position until retiring when the 2010 season was finished with their loss to the Giants.

Here are allsports predictions for the League Championships.

American League Logo

Texas has home field against the Yankees but that should not bother the Yankees, they have plenty of experience. What may bother them though is the Rangers starting pitching. Texas is a little deeper than New York in that department but the Yankees have a little better bull pen. Look for the series to go the distance and in the end the Yankees will face Cliff Lee in a game seven. Allsports is hoping the Rangers can come through. Texas in 7 games.

National League Logo

In the National League, San Fran travels to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies, starting on Saturday. This series is intriguing due to the fact that these two clubs likely have the two best starting pitching rotations. The Phillies have home field advantage but the biggest difference is the Phillies have more offense than the Giants. Better bats throughout the lineup. The Phillies have an American League type of batting order with many weapons to strike with. Look for a low scoring series with the great starting pitching that both teams have. You better stay around for the late innings because that is where the fireworks will likely be. That said as I have stated from the beginning, Philadelphia is just too strong a team from the pitching on out. Phillies in 6 games.

So there you have it, allsports take on the road to the World Series.

“No Guts No Glory”

Allsports article on Roy Halladay's no hitter against the Cincinnati Reds last night along with other MLB playoff sports news

Roy Halladay

Allsports here for sports news and sports on the web. So Roy Halladay finally got his wish to pitch in a meaningful game in October and he made the most of it. After 12 years with np playoffs Halladay took the mound last night and pitched a gem. He no hit the Cincinnati Reds, with the only blemish from a perfect game being a two out walk in the 5th inning. Halladay pulled off the no hitter on 104 pitches, 79 strikes and 25 balls. He got ahead in the count on 25 of the 28 batters he faced.

Halladay no hits the Reds

Here is a little MLB trivia to go along with the accomplishment. It was the first no hitter since Don Larsen of the Yankees did it in 1956. The league has been around for 104 years. It took 52 years for Larsen to pitch his no hitter and coincidentally in took 52 more years till Halladay did it last night. That’s right, only two no hitters in 104 years of playoff baseball. Halladay is the first pitcher to get more hits in a game than he gave up. Halladay, singled and scored a run in the 3rd inning, at least I think it was the 3rd.

Cliff Lee beats the Rays

In other MLB playoff sports news, Cliff Lee ran his playoff record to 5-0 as he beat the Rays 5-1 last night. Allsports thinks this series is far from over though because Tampa is just too good a team to go away quietly. The Yankees erased a Minnesota 3-0 lead to come back and win 6-4. The Twins must be getting tired of this as the Yankees have beaten them seven straight times in the playoffs.

So here are allsports predictions in the opening round of the playoffs.

Phillies over the Reds in 4 games ( they better cause I like them for the ring as I have stated previously)

Yankees over the Twins in 4 games ( I would love to see the Twins pull off the series but just can’t see it happening)

Rays over the Rangers in 5 games ( Tampa finished first in the toughest division in baseball and their too good to go out this early)

Giants over the Braves in 4-5 games (San Fran has great pitching and likely the next best behind the Phillies)

So there you have it, now lets see if allsports is right.
